Biography

Biography: My Name is Dee McCourt, after years of working in a call centre and mcdonalds I decided to follow my interest in art and find a way to turn my passion into a career this is when I started out in hairdressing. After 4 years of working in hairdressing I realised that my real passion was cutting and styling gents hair. I always knew that I wanted to be different and stand out from the rest of the barbering scene in my home town and so i started to learn and take in as much as i could about barbering and soon combined my knowledge of hairdressing into the mix. I now work out of "Bareknuckle Barbers" which is based in Derry city. In order to promote myself in the industry I frequently attend any barbering/ hairdressing shows in order to get my name recognised, I am forever meeting and making new friends and networking by showing other others support and helping in any way i can, I hold my own education workshops on a monthly basis and I have recently started planning and organising travelling across europe to deliver my education in other barbershops/salons.

What is your proudest achievement to date?

My proudest moment to date would have to be organising my own business trip to Prague in order to collaborate with my very good friend in delivering 2 educational workshops in 1 day. For me it was more the message behind it that i was able to teach my 2 kids, that nothing in this life is impossible, if you work hard at it and take the steps needed then anything is possible.

Who inspires you in the industry and why?

I take inspirations on a daily basis from absolutely anything and anyone, as i said previously the Matakki family are huge inspirations and a perfect example of anything is possible if you believe in yourself and put in the hard work. I have looked up to this company since i started working with hair and the people who are associated with the name are huge motivators for me, Paul Mac is a credit to the industry and a real good friend after meeting with him a few times and getting to know him, Ryan Cullen is another inspiration as he is the man who started the "texturised spikes" and also a really humbling person despite the success he has achieved, and of course Tommie McGuckin and Colin Petrie and the rest of the hard grind boys for showing by perfect example to always be yourself, no matter how crazy it may seem. 2 of the main people at the minute who I would look to for ideas or inspiration would be the work that braid barbers and liam oakes have been producing, I love how they are incorporating 2 seperate fields of work and combining them into 1 work of art. Music inspires me on a daily basis as my mood could change depending on the music i am listening to and if my mood changes then so does the end result of my image, the biggest inspiration and motivation for anything i do would be my 2 kids, they are the reason i continue to push and work towards more.

What is your favourite food?

Sausages, Beans and mashed spuds.

Inspirational Quote

The best bit of advice i can give is to always be yourself, no matter how hard it may seem, be yourself and try and find your own image. If you try to recreate someone elses image you will always be in their shadow, once you find your own niche you will be unique and feel more confident and happy with your work. The best inspirational quote i live by is "wrong is wrong, even if everyone is doing it. Right is right, even if no-one is doing it
