Shear Maintenance

Matakki Shears Care & Maintenance Guide.

Cleaning

Using a soft clean cloth, thoroughly wipe your shears after every haircut. This will reduce the build-up of chemicals and hair which may affect the performance of your shears throughout the working day.

Lubrication

After cleaning and drying your shears we recommend that you lubricate. Carefully open your shear to a 90 degree angle and apply 1 drop of Matakki shear oil to where the shear pivots. This assists in the cleaning process by pushing dirt, debris and hair from under the pivot and leaves a small layer of protective shear oil. This process should be carried out daily to prolong the life of your shear.

Why oil and clean daily?

Daily oiling and cleaning will enhance the performance and extend the cutting life of your Matakki shears. Regular cleaning and lubrication protects your shears against the chemicals and moisture typically found in the salon environment.

Balancing

Correct tension of your shears will ensure you get the best use out of your shears. If the tension is too loose it will cause your shears to fold and bend the hair and if it’s too tight it will cause premature wear of the blade edges and user fatigue. To test for correct tension hold the shears with the points/tips upwards. Holding the shear in both hands, lift one handle up to a 90 degree angle and then let go of the handle. If the blade closes quickly and completely then the tension is much too loose. Adjust the tension and re-test so that the blades close about two thirds of the way.

Storage

When your shears are not being used please keep the blades closed as this will reduce the chance of accidental damage to the blade edges. How you store your shears is also very important and for added protection you should always store your shears in the protective case provided.

Sharpening

Your shears will have a very long lasting sharp edge if they are serviced correctly. When the time comes to have your shears sharpened then the process must be done through an approved Matakki service centre that has the facility and experience to sharpen and re-balance Matakki shears.  Using an unauthorised service centre may cause damage to the blades of your Matakki shears which may void your warranty. If unsure, please contact us before carrying out any service work.

Do

  • Use a soft clean cloth and thoroughly wipe your shears after every haircut.
  • Clean, dry and lubricate your shears at the end of each working day.

Don’t

  • Don’t use your shears if the blades are nicked, this will cause further damage.
  • Don’t store your shears when dirty - Love your Matakki shears.
  • Don’t throw your shears in a drawer when not in use as this may damage the blade edges.
  • Don’t let your shears come into contact with any sterilization liquid, perm or colour solution as it may damage and cause corrosion to your shears, voiding your warranty.
